A vaginal hysterectomy is open procedure to remove the uterus through the vagina. During the procedure, the surgeon makes an incision in the top of the vagina and detaches the uterus from the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and upper vagina. The uterus and cervix are then removed through the vagina. They may also remove one or both fallopian tubes (salpingectomy), and one or both ovaries (oophorectomy).
