A transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion is a surgical procedure to treat spinal instability or weakness by permanently uniting bones of the lumbar (lower) spine. The surgery decompresses (removes the pressure from) the spinal cord and/or nerves, re-stabilizes the spine, and prevents further movement and degeneration at the joints in question.
