Removal of spinal fixation, or hardware removal, is a surgical procedure to remove hardware used in a previous spinal surgery. Loosening, shifting, or breakage of instrumentation frequently occurs when the bones of the spine don’t heal or fuse correctly. The surgeon will re-open the original incision, remove any scar tissue that has grown over the hardware, and remove the hardware if the spine has fused correctly.
