A lumbar or sacral medial branch block is a pain management procedure where a doctor injects an anesthetic near small medial nerves in the lumbar or sacrum to temporarily block pain signals coming from the medial nerves. Medial nerves run through the facet joints in the spine that allow for movement between vertebrae. The goal of this injection is to treat pain and identify whether the pain is coming from the facet joints.
