A lumbar microdiscectomy is a minimally-invasive surgical procedure that involves removing portions of the discs in between bones in the spine. This procedure is done in two separate sections of the spine and is often completed when discs are compressed, or bulging out from the spine resulting in pain. Microdiscectomy is a surgical procedure for the relief of pain and other symptoms that occur when a herniated disc in the spine presses on an adjacent nerve root. During the operation, the surgeon frees the nerve by removing small fragments of disc, bone and ligament.
