A lumbar microdiscectomy is a minimally-invasive surgical procedure that involves removing portions of the discs in between bones in the spine. During the operation, the surgeon frees the nerve by removing small fragments of disc, bone and ligament. This procedure is often performed when discs are compressed, or bulging out from the spine resulting in pain. The procedure can provide relief from pain and other symptoms that occur when a herniated disc in the spine presses on an adjacent nerve root.
