A lumbar laminectomy with foraminotomy/facetectomy is a surgical procedure that involves removing portions of bones from two different sections of the spinal column, and widening the canal that surrounds the spinal nerves. During the foraminotomy, the surgeon re-opens the foramina (gaps in the spinal joints) when they have been narrowed by an overgrowth of bone. This surgery can relieve pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots to alleviate pain.
