A laparoscopy-assisted vaginal hysterectomy (LAVH) with salpingectomy and/or oophorectomy is a minimally-invasive procedure to remove the uterus. The surgeon makes small incisions in the abdomen and uses a laparoscope to help detach the uterus from the ovaries, fallopian tubes and upper vagina. The uterus is then removed through the vagina. The surgeon will also remove one or both fallopian tubes (salpingectomy), and one or both ovaries (oophorectomy) through the vagina. Often, the procedure also involves the removal of the cervix. This procedure can help treat abnormal or heavy vaginal bleeding, severe pain with menses, fibroids, pelvic pain, uterine prolapse and cervical or uterine cancer.
