Gastric bypass surgery is a type of weight-loss surgery in which the stomach is divided into a small upper pouch and a much larger lower "remnant" pouch - then the small intestine is rearranged to connect to both. After the surgery, swallowed food will go into the small pouch of stomach and then directly into the small intestine, thereby bypassing most of the stomach and the first section of the small intestine. This variation is performed with robotic-assistance using da Vinci technology. With the da Vinci system, the surgeon sits at a console near you in the operating room.
