A DEXA scan, also called a bone density test, is a specialized imaging procedure that uses two types of energy. This is used to measure the density of one or more bony areas on the hips, pelvis, or spine to determine the bone mineral density and whether the patient has osteopenia or osteoporosis. You may need to have a bone density scan if you're: over 50 with a risk of developing osteoporosis. under 50 with other risk factors, such as smoking or a previous broken bone.
