A department of transportation physical examination is an office visit that includes a basic physical examination and the completion of required paperwork for an individual to be certified to work for the Department of Transportation. This examination is intended for individuals over the age of 35 or those who have smoked in the last 5 years as it includes a spirometry - breathing test. Certification is not guaranteed and the doctor may provide a referral to a specialist if basic testing reveals the need for more treatment or testing.
