A cervical or thoracic medial branch block is a pain management procedure where a doctor injects anesthetic, steroids, and a substance that destroys nerve tissue near the medial nerves. This disrupts damaged nerves in the facet joints from transmitting signals to the brain. Medial nerves run through the facet joints in the spine that allow for movement between vertebrae. The goal of this injection is to treat pain and identify whether a more permanent treatment (RF medial branch neurotomy) would be effective.
