Adenoids removal surgery, also known as adenoidectomy, and ear tubes, also known as bilateral myringotomy with tympanostomy tubes or BMT, is a combined surgical procedure. An adenoidectomy involves removing the small masses of tissue located behind the nose. The doctor numbs and burns them, then surgically remove the swollen or infected adenoids through the mouth. During a BMT, the doctor makes a small opening in the eardrum to drain fluid from the middle ear. Then they place temporary tubes in the eardrum to allow airflow into the middle ear. Both procedures improve hearing and prevent recurring infection.
