An abdominal hysterectomy is an open procedure where the surgeon makes an incision through the abdomen to remove the uterus. They may also remove the cervix, one or both fallopian tubes (salpingectomy), and one or both ovaries (oophorectomy). The most common reasons for having a hysterectomy include: heavy periods (which can be caused by fibroids), pelvic pain (which may be caused by endometriosis), unsuccessfully treated pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), adenomyosis or fibroids, as well as prolapse of the uterus.
